Jamal Hartenstein is the Senior Program Manager for California Public Employees Retirement System’s (CalPERS’) IT Security Roadmap Program. CalPERS is the largest public pension fund in the United States, managing hundreds of billions of dollars in investment assets and is responsible for millions of California state employee’s retirements. Jamal manages the IT Security budget and liaises between cyber security divisions and legal departments to help executive staff make decisions on how to best protect their ever expanding enclave. Millions of member’s financial and healthcare information is on the line, and cyber security law is still nascent with respect to what standards organizations are expected to meet in defense of cyber threats.

Prior to joining CalPERS, Jamal served as an Electronic Warfare Sergeant in the US Army Military Intelligence Corps where he was a steward for Defense Information Security Agency (DISA) framework. He earned his J.D. from University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in California where he now helps organizations implement Computer Information System Cyber Security Controls (CIS CSC) as mandated by the Attorney General.
